Introduction to Live Shell and Live File Explorer
Live Shell and Live File Explorer gives Sysadmins new ways to work directly with remote devices in PDQ Connect. Instead of building a deployment or starting a full remote desktop session for every task, sysadmins can now open a live command-line session or securely move files to and from an endpoint directly from the device page.
These tools are designed for fast, hands-on troubleshooting and administration. Whether you need to inspect a device, run a quick command, collect a log file, or place a file on an endpoint, Live Shell and Live File Explorer help reduce the steps required to get the job done.
Common use cases include:
- Troubleshoot devices with Live Shell: Open an interactive command-line session on a remote device to investigate issues, check system configuration, inspect services and processes, or run administrative commands without creating a deployment.
- Perform quick administrative tasks: Use Live Shell for one-off actions that do not require a reusable package or automation, making it easier to respond to issues as they happen.
- Send files to devices: Upload scripts, configuration files, installers, or other resources directly to an endpoint when you need them available locally.
- Collect files from remote devices: Use Live File Explorer to retrieve logs, configuration files, diagnostic information, or other files needed for troubleshooting.
Starting a Live Session
Sysadmins can start a live session using remote shell or the live file explorer from within PDQ Connect, without interrupting an end-user. A live session using either of these tools can be started from the list view by clicking on the relevant action icon, or by viewing a device and clicking the action bottom in the top right-corner of the device screen.
Managing Feature Access
Administrative users can manage access to both the Live Shell and Live File Explorer features through roles and permissions within PDQ Connect. Access to the Live Shell experience is controlled by enabling or disabling the "Run commands" permission, which also controls access to the Commands feature. The "Manage Files" permission controls access to the Live File Explorer capability.
Feature Availability
Both Live Shell and Live File Explorer are available only on the Plus and Premium plans. Learn more about the different PDQ Connect plans by clicking here
